Project 2: Snowflake Decoration
Materials and Tools
To create a snowflake decoration, one will need pieces of old fence pickets. The strips should be cut to an inch and a quarter wide and then to 5/8 inches wide. Three of the inch and a quarter pieces should be cut to 12 inches long. Then, one should set the miter saw to 50 degrees and cut more of the inch and a quarter pieces to two inches long, making little diamond shapes. One will need 12 total for one snowflake. The 5/8 inch pieces should be cut to 3 inches, and again, one will need 12 per snowflake. Additionally, a screw, glue, flat white paint, and contrasting paint are required. Wooden craft beads, ribbon, and a stapler will be used to hang the snowflakes.
Building Process
To make the snowflake, one should stack the three 12-inch pieces on top of each other and use a screw to hold them together. Then, one should cut two of the 12-inch pieces in half and then cut 30-degree angles on the ends. A little jig can be made from a piece of EVA foam floor pads for the assembly. Once the glue is dry, the snowflakes should be painted with a flat white paint. Then, the cut pieces should be painted with contrasting paint to add a little contrast. To hang the snowflakes, wooden craft beads should be painted, strung onto some ribbon, and stapled to the back of the snowflakes.
Adjustments
One can adjust the thickness of the snowflake by cutting two of the 12-inch pieces in half and then cutting 30-degree angles on the ends. This will make it easier to attach some of the diamond pieces.
Finishing Touches
The snowflakes can be hung using wooden craft beads, ribbon, and a stapler.
Project 3: 4×4 Candle Holder
Materials and Tools
To make this candle holder, you will need a piece of 4×4 wood that is at least five inches long, a 7/8 inch forstner bit, a small hacksaw, a bench sander, Odie’s Oil, a cork pad, a three-quarter inch copper pipe, and hot glue.
Building Process
The first step is to drill a hole off-center about two inches deep into the 4×4 using the forstner bit. Then, mark the center of the wood and make two 45-degree cuts on both sides to make it look like a little house. Batch out several of these houses for a better effect.
Next, cut the copper pipe to the desired length and sand the edges with the bench sander. Apply a coat of Odie’s Oil to the little house and glue the cork pad to the bottom. Finally, attach the copper pipe to the bottom of the house with hot glue.
Finishing Touches
To finish the candle holder, you can stain it with a white stain. Another option is to slice off the rounded corners of the wood and drill holes in all four sides, slightly overlapping each hole. Then, drill a hole in the top of the 4×4 using a forstner bit, deep enough to fit a tea candle. Attach a cork pad to the bottom and your candle holder is complete.
