How to build a thin blue line flag. Building a thin blue line flag is easy to do with the right materials and tools. If you want to make a thin blue line flag wall art, watch the video. This DIY thin blue line flag is a nice statement piece to support police officers. You can also use this method to make a thin red-line flag or you can build an American flag. This same format can be used to make a flag out of wood in many styles.

Cut list to build the flag:

7 – 1 1/2″ strips cut 22 1/2″ long

Union cut 14 1/2″ wide by 10 5/8″ tall

How to Build an American Flag Out of Wood

Subscribe to 731 Woodworks on Youtube

In this video, Matt shows you how to build an American Flag out of wood. This is a DIY American flag made out of wood with the Pledge of Allegiance hand painted on the stripes. This is a beautiful piece of American Flag wall art. His wife added the lettering by hand. He makes these flags out of spruce wood. He uses red, white, and blue water-based stain for the colors on this. The stars are painted using a stencil (see link above) and flat white spray paint. You will get a little overspray from the paint if you are not very careful. This is where distressing the flag helps.

Cut list to build the flag:

6 – 1 1/2″ strips cut 37″ long

7 – 1 1/2″ strips cut 22 1/2″ long

Union cut 14 1/2″ wide by 10 5/8″ tall

You’ll need 4 – 1 1/2″ strips for the back running vertical to hold the flag together. These are cut 18 1/2″ long. He uses glue and brad nails to attach them to the back. The hanging hardware is attached to the outer 2 vertical strips. Stains used in this build are from Sherwin Williams. He just had them mix me red, white, and blue stains.

Colors are: MW-51 Navy Blue, Crimson Red, and just plain white stain.

American Flag Project

Subscribe to 731 Woodworks on Youtube

This is how Matt uses a 50-star stencil to build my flags and stencil on wood projects. Stenciling on wood without bleeding can be a challenge, to say the least. A lot of times if you use standard stencils, as seen in some of my other videos, you get a lot of paint bleed under the stencil. The best way to prevent that is to have a stick-on stencil. He tried craftbond to help the regular stencils stick better, but it never worked quite right. So he bought a Cricut Explore Air 2 for my stenciling. Now when building a flag, he makes his own American Flag 50-star stencil. It works great for how he makes wood signs and flags with stenciling. Now he gets crisp clean lines when using the stencil. If the grain is deep on a piece of wood, you may still get a slight bleed, but it usually cleans up with a weeding tool you get with your Cricut. The stencil peels off after he’s done to reveal a nice crisp design. As you can see on this one-of-a-kind wood Marine Corps flag he made recently, it came out absolutely beautiful.
