What Are Wood Mites And How Do You Get Rid Of Them?

Wood mites are extremely tiny organisms, typically no longer than 0.09 inches in length and they are normally white. Apart from these characteristics, they can be identified by the fine silken thread that they tend to leave behind, especially on plants.

They are naturally harmless organisms as they do not directly cause severe harm to humans or our properties, unlike termites, but they can seriously affect people who suffer from certain allergies.

These troublesome pests are difficult to see but they have very long body hairs and they shed them regularly and these hairs could end up being allergen carriers which would eventually affect the people in the house who suffer from allergies.

Wood mites are so tiny that they could easily be tracked into your home without you knowing. If you use wood-burning stoves or even use one or more logs to start a coal fire in your house.

There is a high possibility that wood mites are present on those pieces of wood and followed you from either the store or wherever you got the wood, and into your home. It is also very easy for the wood mites to be present on any wooden material you bring into your home, even Christmas trees.

It is even easy for the wood mites to attach themselves to you if you were in the presence of wooden material that had those mites on it. It is best to do a proper cleanup when you or your house comes into contact with such materials.

What Are Wood Mites?

Wood mites are tiny creatures that live in wood. They are related to spiders and ticks and can be found in both indoor and outdoor environments. Wood mites are not harmful to humans but can cause allergic reactions in some people. They are usually found in wooded areas, hence their name.

Wood mites can be a nuisance because they bite people and animals, leaving behind red, itchy welts. Wood mites can also infest homes and cause allergic reactions in some people.

How To Get Rid Of Wood Mites?

The process of getting rid of wood mites could seem an arduous effort but it is best to remove these wood mites before they cause any damage to your properties or trigger any allergies.

The steps to take to get rid of wood mites are:

1. Inspection of the area and locating of mites: Wood mites are tiny white bugs that naturally feed on decomposing wood, although they are quite different from termites. So you need to first of all find where they are living. The first clue for you when looking for wood mites is in their preferred place of habitation which is piles of damp wood and behind any moist tree bark. You need to get rid of all the moisture and mold in those areas because wood mites love to stay in moist regions. You need to get rid of all the mold that you find as well. Make sure you inspect all the areas thoroughly to be sure of exactly where those mites are staying.

2. Buy an anti-mite insecticide: You should purchase an anti-mite insecticide from your local gardening or home supply store. You could get a multi-purpose insecticide that will get rid of other types of mites as well. It is best to get a non-residual spray so it would eradicate the microorganisms without leaving any long-lasting effect.

3. Cleansing the area of all mite-infested items: You should use the insecticide that you purchased on all those mite-infested areas that you identified earlier and then clean your house from top to bottom. It is a must that you thoroughly clean every nook and cranny of your house, from the bedroom to the kitchen and even bathrooms. Vacuum all the floors, carpets, rugs, and mats all through your home. Do not forget to clean under your furniture and behind curtains, drapes, and shutters. Mop the floors with hot water and a good floor cleaner, then wash your pillows and pillowcases, bed coverings, duvets, quilts, and so on, putting them in heated conditions for a good period.

Because wood mites could seem so incredibly difficult to get rid of, you could then take drastic measures. If the mites have invaded your cigar humidor, you could just place it in the freezer for a couple of hours because the mite eggs can not survive in cold conditions.

You could also purchase hypoaspis mites which are predatory mites that would consume the wood mites. You can easily get this at a nearby gardening supply store or even order it online. Either way, you simply release these mites into the wood mite-infested region in your home and they would consume all the wood mites. You do not have to be worried about a new infestation by these hypoaspis mites as they would eventually die off in a matter of days.

It is a known fact that houses that have excessive levels of moisture in them typically have more than one pest living there. This is one of the reasons that if you do have serious problems with the wood mites, it is best to contact a Pest Management Professional to get rid of it.

The Pest Management Professional is best suited to assess any pest infestation situation, analyze it, and suggest what needs to be done accordingly. They would also be able to detect any pest problems that you were formerly unaware of and tell you exactly what needs to be done to remove it.

As stated before, moisture could certainly invite wood mites to your house. Taps and water lines seem to be the main causes of this so you should examine the foundation of your house for where water may be seeping in as well as your roof. If you happen to live in naturally moist conditions, you might consider getting a dehumidifier or getting a central heating system so the air remains permanently dry and you can ward off the wood mites.

You should also inspect whatever kind of plants you have in your house as they could be infested with wood mites. It could prove extremely difficult to get rid of these wood mites once they have fully inhabited your space, so be sure to do away with them as quickly as you can.

A wood mite bite looks like a small, red dot on the skin. Wood mites are very tiny creatures, and their bites are usually not painful. However, some people may experience an allergic reaction to the bite, which can cause swelling and irritation.

Types Of Mites:

Spider Mites

Spider mites are tiny arachnids that are closely related to spiders. They are very small, measuring only about 0.002 inches in diameter. These pests are usually red, brown, or green in color and have two body regions: the cephalothorax and the abdomen. The cephalothorax is where the legs and mouthparts are located, while the abdomen contains the reproductive organs. Spider mites have four pairs of legs and are covered in tiny hairs.

Spider mites feed on plant sap, which they pierce with their sharp mouthparts. This feeding can damage plants, causing leaves to turn yellow or brown and eventually drop off. They also produce a web-like substance that covers plant leaves and protects them from predators. This webbing can also cause damage to plants by blocking out sunlight and preventing air circulation.

Spider mites are a serious problem for crops and gardens because they can reproduce very quickly. A single female spider mite can lay up to 20 eggs per day, and a population can increase exponentially in a short period of time. These pests are also difficult to control because they can quickly develop resistance to pesticides.

Clover Mites

Clover mites are small, red, spider-like creatures that invade homes in large numbers. They are a nuisance because they can bite humans and animals, and their excrement can stain fabrics. Clover mites do not carry diseases, but their bites can cause skin irritation.

Clover mites get their name from the fact that they often feed on clover and other grasses. They are most active in spring and early summer, but they can be a problem year-round in some areas. Clover mites can enter homes through cracks in the foundation or doors and windows that are not properly sealed.

Dust Mites

Dust mites are tiny creatures that live in your home and feed on your skin cells. They are too small to see with the naked eye, but they can cause a lot of problems for people who are allergic to them.

Dust mites are one of the most common causes of allergies and asthma attacks. They are also a major trigger for eczema flare-ups. If you have any of these conditions, it is important to try to reduce the number of dust mites in your home.

Itch Mites

Itch mites are tiny, spider-like creatures that feast on the blood of humans and animals. These pests are a major problem in many parts of the world, causing intense itching and irritation.

There are several ways to get rid of itch mites, including using insecticidal sprays or powders, vacuuming regularly, and keeping your home clean and free of clutter.

Mold Mites

Mold mites are very small, invisible to the naked eye. They are members of the arachnid family and are related to spiders, ticks, and scorpions. Mold mites live in damp, humid environments and are often found in homes with mold or mildew problems. These pests feed on mold and mildew spores and can cause allergic reactions in some people.

Scabies Mites

Scabies mites are tiny creatures that cause a lot of problems for people. The mites burrow under the skin and lay eggs. The eggs hatch and the mites start to feed on the person’s blood. This can cause a lot of itching and irritation. Scabies mites can also spread diseases like typhus and rickettsialpox.

Chiggers

Chiggers are tiny, red mites that are found in wooded areas. These pests are attracted to the warmth and moisture of humans and animals, and they can cause a great deal of itching and irritation. Chiggers are most active in the summer months, but they can be a problem year-round in some areas.

Are Wood Mites Dangerous?

Wood mites aren’t dangerous but they can be a real nuisance. If you have allergies, you may experience difficulty breathing, itchy eyes, and a runny nose. Some people may also develop a rash. If you have asthma, wood mites can trigger an attack.

If you think you have wood mites, it’s important to see your doctor so they can rule out other causes of your symptoms.

What Attracts Wood Mites?

Wood mites are attracted by a few different things. One of the most common is wood that has been left outside and exposed to the elements. This could be anything from firewood to a piece of lumber that was sitting in your backyard.

Wood mites are also attracted to damp conditions, so if you have any leaks or standing water on your property, this could be attracting wood mites.

Finally, wood mites are attracted to darkness, so if you have any dark, secluded areas on your property, this could also be attracting wood mites.

Do Wood Mites Destroy Plants?

Wood mites can destroy plants. The mites are tiny insects that feed on the plant’s sap. They pierce the plant’s leaves and stems to get to the sap, which they suck out of the plant.

This feeding can damage the plant’s tissue and cause it to wilt, turn yellow, and eventually die. Wood mites are most commonly found on plants that are already weakened or stressed, as they are more likely to pierce the plant’s leaves and stems.

Can You Kill Wood Mites With Vinegar?

Yes, you can kill wood mites with vinegar. Vinegar is a natural acidic substance that can kill many different types of pests, including wood mites.

To use vinegar to kill wood mites, simply mix equal parts vinegar and water in a spray bottle and then spray the mixture onto any areas where you see wood mites or their eggs. The vinegar will kill the wood mites on contact.
