Building the Solid Foundation

Every good storage project starts with a base. For this system, a 9-foot-long, 2-foot-deep platform was built using 2x4s and 2½-inch screws.

To ensure durability:

  • Shims were added to keep the platform perfectly level.
  • The base was anchored directly into studs with 3½-inch screws.
  • The platform was elevated slightly, protecting untreated lumber from potential garage water seepage.

Plywood was cut into 30-inch strips to match the garage door clearance. The plywood also provided a toe kick, making the design both functional and ergonomic.


Creating the Modular Partitions

The key innovation in this build was the use of modular partitions, which act as vertical supports from floor to ceiling.

Each partition was constructed from:

  • Two 2x4s
  • ¾-inch plywood strips as spacers

These were cut to size, set snugly between the base and ceiling, then fastened securely. Because partitions are independent and adjustable, the system can be reconfigured easily—like adult-sized Legos.


Adding Tote Storage

Plastic totes are a garage essential, but stacking them on the floor wastes space. Using ripped 2x4s and spacers, the partitions were fitted with horizontal supports, allowing totes to slide in like drawers.

Spacing was carefully measured:

  • 12¾ inches for the bottom row
  • 14 inches for each upper row

The result? Multiple tiers of organized, easy-access tote storage.


Installing Custom Shelves

For items that don’t fit well in totes, custom shelving was added between partitions.

  • 24-inch-deep shelves were installed where clearance was limited.
  • Supports were anchored into the partitions and cinderblock walls with Tapcon screws for stability.
  • Each shelf could be repositioned by simply unscrewing four screws.

This modular approach ensures shelves can be moved, adjusted, or removed without dismantling the entire system.


Vertical Bike Storage

To tackle bulky bicycles, vertical storage was added using budget-friendly bike hooks.

  • Hooks were mounted into a 2×4, secured to wall studs.
  • Bikes hang from the front tire, saving floor space.
  • Staggered placement prevented handlebars from colliding.

It’s a simple, affordable, and effective solution.


Tool Cubby & Lawn Equipment Organization

One section of the partition was converted into a tool cubby lined with plywood. This allowed the reuse of FastTrack rails and hooks, keeping lawn tools separate and easily accessible.

By repurposing existing hardware, the builder maximized storage efficiency without spending more money.


Expanding with a Shelf Tower

An additional 2-foot-wide shelf tower was built to accommodate plumbing obstacles in the garage ceiling.

  • Shelves were stacked for quick-access items.
  • The tower connected seamlessly to the tote storage via a 3-foot “mini workbench” shelf.
  • At the top, a large shelf tied everything together, while leaving room below for a tool chest.

This addition showed how adaptable the system is when working around structural challenges.
