Wood joinery is a process of joining two pieces of wood together to create a single, stronger piece. There are many different types of wood joints, each with its own set of benefits and drawbacks.
In this blog post, we will discuss the most common wood joints and how to execute them properly. We’ll also take a look at some tips and tricks for getting the most out of your wood joinery projects!
This video covers a brief overview of 12 basic wood joints and examples of projects each joint is commonly used for.
The butt joint is the simplest of all wood joints. It is two pieces of wood glued or nailed together end to end. One disadvantage of this joint is that it tends to be weak in tension along the grain of the wood.
Mitered Butt Joint
The mitered butt joint is one of the most popular and commonly used woodworking joints. It’s strong, easy to make, and can be used in a variety of applications.
There are a few different ways to cut a mitered butt joint, but the most common is with a table saw. To do this, you’ll need to set your saw blade to a 45 degree angle. Then, make a cut along the length of one of your boards. Repeat this process with the other board.
Once you have your two pieces cut, it’s time to assemble the joint. To do this, you’ll need to apply some glue to the ends of both boards and then fit them together at a 90 degree angle. Once the glue is dry, you should have a strong and sturdy mitered butt joint.
Pocket Hole Joint
The pocket hole joint is a very strong and versatile joint that can be used in a variety of woodworking projects. It is especially well suited for joining boards at right angles, but can also be used to join boards end to end or side to side.
There are a few different ways to make pocket hole joints, but the most common method is to use a jig. A jig is a simple tool that helps to guide the drill bit and keep it at a consistent angle. There are many different types of jigs available on the market, but they all work in essentially the same way.

The dado joint is one of the most basic and versatile woodworking joints. It’s used to join two pieces of wood along their length, usually at right angles to each other. The dado joint is strong and can be reinforced with dowels or screws if necessary.
There are many different ways to cut a dado joint, but the most common is to use a router. A router is a handheld power tool that cuts away material from the surface of a piece of wood. Routers can be used to create many different types of joints, but the dado joint is one of the most common.
To cut a dado joint, first mark out the location of the joint on the two pieces of wood. Then, using a straightedge or a guide, set the router to the correct depth and width. Finally, cut along the marked line with the router.
If you’re not comfortable using a router, there are other ways to cut a dado joint. You can use a chisel and hammer, or even a saw.
The rabbet joint is one of the most basic and versatile woodworking joints. It’s also one of the easiest to make, which is why it’s so popular among woodworkers of all skill levels. In its simplest form, a rabbet joint is nothing more than two pieces of wood joined together at right angles.
There are many different ways to cut a rabbet joint, but the most common is to use a table saw or router. If you’re using a table saw, you’ll need to set the blade to the desired width and depth. For a router, you’ll need to use a rabbet bit with the same dimensions.
Once the cuts are made, all that’s left to do is glue the two pieces of wood together. Be sure to use a good quality wood glue, and apply it liberally to both surfaces. Clamp the pieces together until the glue is dry, and you’re done!
The sliding dovetail joint is one of the most versatile and strongest woodworking joints there is. It’s been used for centuries in a variety of applications, from furniture to cabinetry to wooden toys.
The great thing about the sliding dovetail joint is its adjustability. By simply changing the size or placement of the tails and pins, you can create a joint that’s either loose or snug, depending on your needs.
Another advantage of the sliding dovetail joint is that it’s easy to make by hand, without the need for fancy woodworking tools or machines. All you need is a saw and a chisel (and a little patience!).
The half lap joint is one of the most versatile and commonly used joints in woodworking. It’s strong, easy to make, and can be used in a variety of ways. Here’s how to make a half lap joint:
First, mark out the joint on your workpiece. Make sure the marks are accurate and square to the edges of the piece. Then, using a saw, cut along the lines you’ve marked.
Next, use a chisel to remove the waste material from the cuts you’ve made. Be careful not to damage the surrounding wood.
Finally, fit the two pieces of wood together and secure with glue, screws or nails. You now have a strong and sturdy half lap joint!

When Setting Up Shop
A woodworking friend of mine shared this video by Ralph Chapman with me that helped him set up his workshop.
The video explains the benefits of Ralph Chapman’s guide about setting up an affordable workshop and avoiding the most common mistakes offers to anyone interested in woodworking.
The through dovetail joint has been used for centuries in furniture and cabinetry, and is still one of the go-to methods for joining two boards together.
There are a few different ways to cut a through dovetail joint, but the most common method is to use a router and a dovetail jig.
A dovetail jig is a template that guides your router to cut the right size and shape for the dovetail pins and tails.
Half Blind Dovetail
The half-blind dovetail is one of the most popular joinery techniques used by woodworkers. This type of joint is strong and attractive, making it a great choice for both functional and decorative projects.
There are a few different ways to cut half-blind dovetails, but the most common method is to use a dovetail jig. This type of jig is easy to use and provides consistent, accurate results.
Once you have your jig set up, cutting the half-blind dovetails is a relatively simple process. First, you’ll need to cut tails on both pieces of wood that will be joined together. Next, you’ll cut pins on one of the pieces.
To assemble the joint, simply insert the tails into the pins and glue them in place. Once the glue has dried, your half-blind dovetail joint will be strong and durable.
Box joints are versatile and can be used for both decorative and functional purposes.
There are a few different ways to cut box joints, but the most common is with a table saw. You can also use a router, but it’s a bit more difficult and requires a special jig.
If you’re going to be using your box joints for decorative purposes, you can get away with a less than perfect fit. But if they’re going to be functional, it’s important to get a tight fit.
To do this, you’ll need to make sure that the teeth on your saw blade are sharp and that the fence is set at the correct height. You’ll also want to use a stop block to ensure that all of your cuts are the same length.
Once you have your box joint cut, you can finish it off with a chisel or sandpaper. If you’re using it for decoration, you can leave it as-is. But if you’re looking for a more finished look, you can stain or paint it.
Box joints are a great way to add a touch of class to any project. So whether you’re building a box, a piece of furniture, or anything else, don’t be afraid to give them a try!

Mortise & Tenon
There are a few different types of mortise and tenon joinery, but the most common is the through mortise and tenon. This type of joint is made by cutting a rectangular hole (the mortise) into one piece of wood, and then shaping a tongue (the tenon) on another piece that fits snugly into the mortise.
To make a through mortise and tenon joint, start by cutting the mortise with a drill or router. Then mark out the location of the tenon on the other piece of wood. Use a saw to cut away most of the waste material, and then use a chisel to remove any remaining waste and to shape the edges of the tenon.
Once the mortise and tenon are cut, fit them together and secure with glue or dowels. This type of joint is strong and can be used for a variety of different applications.
